Elite Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Miami Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Elite-compatible keypads and intercom modules across Miami, and most repairs run between $195 and $420 installed for the common SL-series and EL-series failures. A keypad that won’t accept codes or an intercom that stopped ringing usually gets diagnosed and fixed the same day we arrive, because we carry the common Elite boards, transformers, and replacement keypads on the truck. Most Miami owners notice the problem the same way: they punch in their code, hear a faint click that isn’t the usual relay sound, and realize the gate isn’t moving. Or the intercom rings once and goes dead. It’s rarely a sudden explosion of smoke. It’s a slow fade that starts with a button you have to press twice.

We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Elite, but we’ve been repairing their gate systems across South Florida for years. Cole Rafferty and the crew know which Elite boards fail first in this climate, and we’ll tell you straight whether you need a new keypad or just a $40 weather seal before we touch anything. That’s the whole point of how we work: know what’s broken before we touch it. Fix it once.

Which Elite Models This Applies To

Elite gate openers and access systems span a few generations, and matching the right keypad or intercom module to yours is where most DIY orders go wrong. The common lines we service in Miami are the SL series (SL-3000, SL-2000, SL-1000 slide gate operators), the EL series (EL-25, EL-2000 swing gate openers), and the older CS and T-series entry systems. Elite also private-labeled a line of wireless keypads and telephone entry units that show up on a lot of Coral Gables and Pinecrest estates from the mid-2000s. Those are the ones where compatibility gets tricky.

Here’s the gotcha: Elite changed their keypad wiring protocol between the older CS series and the newer SL series. A keypad sold as “Elite compatible” may fit the mounting plate but not talk to the board. We check the part number on the back of the keypad or the control board itself before we quote anything. For most Miami homes, the OEM Elite keypad is the right call because the aftermarket options don’t survive our wet season as long. The membrane on a generic keypad will delaminate after a couple of hurricane seasons. We’d rather install the real Elite part with a bead of sealant and call it done for five years.

Signs Your Elite Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

  • You press a key and nothing happens, or it takes two or three presses. This is almost always membrane wear on the keypad face, and we see it constantly in Miami because salt air and humidity eat the conductive layer. The fix is a new keypad, not a new board.
  • The gate opens fine from the remote but not from the keypad. That points to the keypad’s relay or wiring, not the operator motor. We’ll test continuity at the terminal strip before we sell you a part you don’t need.
  • The intercom rings but the voice sounds underwater or cuts out. In our experience, that’s usually a failing speaker cone or a corroded connection at the microphone header. Miami’s humidity gets inside the intercom housing even when the gasket looks fine from the outside.
  • You hear a loud buzz from the intercom box but no ring at the house. A dying transformer or a stuck relay is the usual culprit. We see this on older telephone entry units where the transformer has been running hot for a decade.
  • The keypad lights up but the gate won’t move, even with the master code. This is the one that worries people, but it’s often just a fried limit switch or a blown fuse on the control board. Don’t assume the operator is dead until someone checks the board voltage.

One thing worth saying: if any of this involves exposed wiring, a damaged conduit, or standing water near the operators, call us before you touch anything. Low-voltage keypad wiring won’t hurt you, but a gate operator runs on 120V or 240V, and water plus electricity is a bad combination. We’d rather come out and fix it right than have you open a box that shouldn’t be opened.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Miami, a new Elite keypad installed typically runs $195 to $310 depending on whether it’s a basic wired keypad or a wireless model with a receiver. An intercom or telephone entry module swap runs $275 to $420 installed, more if we’re running a new home-run wire from the gate to the house. The parts themselves are the smaller slice; what you’re paying for is matching the part to your exact Elite series, wiring it correctly at the control board, weatherproofing the housing, and testing it with the gate under load.

We give you a written price before any work starts. Not a range over the phone that becomes a surprise later. The actual number, on paper, with parts and labor separated. Every Elite repair we install is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the repair fails inside a year, the return visit is free. That’s it. No asterisk. If we put the wrong keypad on your gate, that’s our problem, not your invoice.

DIY or Call Us?

There are two things you can safely check before you call us. First, open the keypad housing (if it’s a screw-on faceplate) and look for ants. You read that right. Miami fire ants love the inside of gate keypads, and their nests cause more keypad failures than most people would believe. Second, check the breaker. A tripped GFCI or a tripped breaker on the gate circuit will make the whole system act dead while being a $0 fix.

Beyond that, we’d rather you didn’t start pulling wires. A wrong splice at the board can send voltage back through the keypad and fry a $200 board to save a $40 diagnostic. We show up with the right Elite part on the truck, a photo and name of the technician before arrival, and the repair done in one visit. Call (850) 495-7564 if you want us to take a look. We answer the phone with a person, not a recording.
